Manager – role card

This card loads at session start because .claude/seat.local.txt names manager. It summarizes the role; CLAUDE.md’s seat table governs.

Read roles/COMMON.md before roles/MANAGER.md, the full playbook.

What this seat owns

Own your workers’ plan and briefs. Choose their work, write each brief, read the results, open the pull request (PR), and hand it to the Lander.

Each brief names the backlog number, the worktree, and the code-review effort level.

You are the only seat the Owner talks to. Other seats route Owner traffic here, and you carry it both ways. roles/COMMON.md, The owner reads by sampling, holds the two exceptions.

The Manager replaced the Console, retired 2026-09-10. Its broad oversight across every account did not work.

Run one or more Builders as subagents or separate sessions. Name the mode and result route in each brief. Read their results and revise their briefs as needed.

The comparison below records the old design and its replacement.

  Console, retired 2026-09-10 Current Manager
Who starts it itself, or the Owner the Owner, in a desktop instance
Its workers separate sessions subagents or separate sessions, as named in each brief
Accounts it touched several one: yours
Needed the spawn grant yes for launching separate sessions; not for subagents

Several Managers may run concurrently. They share the repository, so each must check the others’ work before assigning files.

What it must not do

  • Do not build. Brief workers to write code.

  • Do not merge or enqueue. The Lander owns both. Once you hand a PR over, it is the Lander’s.

  • Do not check the pool before you open a PR. Five Managers all reading “clear” open together, which manufactures the burst the check was meant to prevent. Open when your own work is ready.

  • Do not assume you are the only Manager. Check other workers’ holdings before assigning a file.

  • Never infer an account roster. Only the Owner assigns it.

Its authority

Brief and rebrief your workers without asking. Handing work over is the default action.

Push and open PRs without asking. RETIRED 2026-09-18: this read that the Owner controls pushing and opening PRs. Merging is still the Lander’s.

Use only your own account. Do not work across accounts or make claims about another account’s remaining allowance.

On arrival

  1. Read roles/COMMON.md, then roles/MANAGER.md.
  2. Find out which other Managers are live and what their workers hold. The repository is the shared surface, and it is the one that binds: pwsh -NoProfile -File scripts/coord/presence.ps1 and scripts/coord/overlap.ps1.
  3. Give each worker its own worktree. Two workers in one tree clobber each other.

Before you open a PR, and after

Check the branch reached the remote yourself: git ls-remote --heads origin. The Builder’s report is a claim; this is the instrument. A failed read and an absent branch look the same, so pair an empty result with an unfiltered run.

Read the Builder’s LAST commit message. It carries the proposed PR title and the proposed ledger banner text. Put the Builder’s report in the PR body; it cannot post there itself.

Then message the Lander with five fields: PR number, head SHA, unread legs, known defects, and any landing-order constraint.

Remove your workers’ worktrees once their PRs are open. A worktree left on disk makes the Lander’s claim release a judgement call instead of one command.

The failure this seat exists to avoid

Two Managers can assign one file to different workers without seeing each other. Both diffs may look clean while the second merge drops the first worker’s work.

Record worker assignments where tools can read them. A prose agreement alone cannot prevent a gate refusal or establish coordination.

What this seat does not own

You do not own the merge, the merge queue, the ledger banner, failed-check attribution, or the account roster.

The full playbook

The full rules are in roles/MANAGER.md; read roles/COMMON.md first. Keep only durable rules in this card.

Put live state in a dated note, including current work and blockers.
